1. Master the Art of Shim Adjustment

The tension of your fan belt is controlled entirely by the number of shims placed between the two pulley halves. If the belt is too loose, remove a shim from the center and move it to the outside (between the outer pulley half and the nut). If the belt is too tight, add a shim to the center from the outside stack. A perfectly adjusted belt should have about 1/2 inch (13mm) of deflection when pressed firmly with your thumb at the midpoint between the crank pulley and the generator pulley.
