OVERVIEW
The EMPI GT-5 Camshaft is the ultimate solution for Volkswagen enthusiasts seeking to maximize the grunt and low-end responsiveness of their small displacement engines. Often referred to as the ''Super Torquer,'' this camshaft is meticulously engineered to provide a substantial boost in torque right where you need it mostoff the line and through the lower RPM range. Whether you are navigating technical off-road trails in a Baja Bug or looking for better driveability in a heavy Type 2 bus, the GT-5 profile delivers consistent, reliable power without the need for high-revving histrionics. Produced from premium chilled cast iron billets, these cams offer superior surface hardness and durability, ensuring that your valvetrain remains stable even under the stresses of closed-course competition or demanding weekend adventures.
Reliability starts with the manufacturing process, and EMPI hasn''t cut any corners with the GT series. Every GT-5 camshaft undergoes a specialized Parkerizing process, creating a phosphate coating that acts as a dry lubricant to ensure a trouble-free break-in period by retaining oil during those critical first minutes of operation. Additionally, these cams come pre-cleared for stroker cranks, providing extra versatility if you decide to increase your engine''s stroke later on. We include high-strength Grade 8 hardware and specialized assembly lube in the box, giving you the professional-grade components required for a successful installation. When you choose the GT-5 from Appletree Auto, you aren''t just buying a part; you''re investing in a precision-ground component designed to breathe new life into your air-cooled flat-four engine.

PRO TIPS
1. Always Match with New Lifters
One of the most critical rules in air-cooled engine building is that you must NEVER install a new camshaft with used lifters. For the GT-5, we strictly recommend using EMPI Lifters (Part Number 21-4300-0). The lifter and cam lobe must "mate" together during the initial break-in period. Reusing old lifters, which have already developed a wear pattern from a different cam, will lead to immediate lobe failure and can send metal shavings throughout your entire oil system, potentially ruining your bearings and case.
2. Master the Break-In Procedure
The first 20 minutes of your engine''s life are the most important for the GT-5 camshaft. Once the engine fires, you must immediately bring the RPMs up to a steady 2,000 to 2,500 RPM and hold it there for 20 minutes. Do not let the engine idle. This high-RPM state ensures that plenty of oil is being splashed off the crankshaft onto the cam lobes, providing the necessary lubrication for the Parkerized coating to settle. We also recommend using a high-zinc (ZDDP) break-in oil or additive to provide an extra layer of protection against metal-to-metal contact during this phase.
3. Verify Valvetrain Geometry and Coil Bind
With a valve lift of .458 inches, the GT-5 is significantly more aggressive than a stock Volkswagen camshaft. Before final assembly, you must check for "coil bind" on your valve springs. This occurs when the spring is compressed so far that the coils touch each other, which will snap a rocker arm or bend a pushrod instantly. Ensure you have at least .060 inches of remaining travel in the spring at full lift. Additionally, check that your rocker arms are properly centered over the valve stems to prevent premature guide wear, as the increased lift changes the geometry of the factory valvetrain.
