OVERVIEW
Precision is the heartbeat of any high-performance air-cooled engine, and the EMPI Deluxe Dual Carb Linkage Kit is engineered to deliver exactly that. When you transition to a dual Weber IDF or EMPI HPMX setup, the factory single-carb linkage is long gone, leaving you in need of a system that can synchronize two dual-throat carburetors with surgical accuracy. This deluxe hex bar linkage eliminates the sloppy throttle response and inconsistent idling often found in cheaper, universal kits. By utilizing a rigid, thick-walled aluminum hex bar, this kit ensures that both carburetors open and close in perfect unison, preventing the dreaded "stumble" that occurs when one bank of cylinders is pulling more air than the other. Whether you''re building a high-revving street sleeper or a rugged off-road rail, this linkage provides the tactile feedback and reliability required to harness the full potential of your dual-carbureted flat-four.
What sets the Deluxe Version apart from standard kits is the commitment to high-grade materials and a comprehensive component list. This isn''t just a bar and a few rods; it is a complete synchronization solution. The kit features aircraft-quality rod ends and heim joints that offer a smooth, bind-free range of motion, even under the high heat conditions found in a cramped VW engine bay. EMPI has gone the extra mile by including all necessary gaskets and mounting hardware, saving you the frustration of mid-install trips to the hardware store. The heavy-duty steel mounting brackets are designed to resist flexing, ensuring that your synchronization settings stay locked in place mile after mile. If you are tired of constantly re-adjusting your carbs due to linkage drift, this deluxe kit is the upgrade your air-cooled powerhouse deserves.

PRO TIPS
PRO TIP 1: The Secret is in the Synchronization. Even the best linkage in the world won''t save a poorly synchronized engine. Before you final-tighten the set screws on the hex bar, use a high-quality airflow meter (like a Uni-Syn or a snail-style synchronizer) on each carburetor throat. Adjust the idle speed screws until both carburetors are pulling the exact same volume of air at idle. Only after the carbs are matched should you attach and adjust the linkage rods to ensure they both begin to pull the throttle arms at the exact same moment. This prevents "cylinder dragging" and ensures a smooth power curve.
PRO TIP 2: Eliminate Binding and Friction. During installation, check for any binding throughout the entire range of the throttle pedal''s travel. Ensure the hex bar is centered and that the down-rods are at as close to a 90-degree angle as possible to the throttle arms when at half-throttle. If the rods are at extreme angles, they can "cam over" or bind, leading to a sticky throttle. Lubricate the heim joints with a small drop of dry PTFE lubricant; avoid heavy greases that can attract desert dust or road grime, which will eventually grind down the internal bearings of the rod ends.
PRO TIP 3: Check Your Cable Path. When connecting your throttle cable to the center pull arm of the hex bar, ensure the cable is not rubbing against the fan shroud or the sharp edges of the engine tin. Use a proper throttle cable guide tube if necessary. A frayed cable is the number one cause of "unexplained" idle issues and sticking throttles. Also, always double-check that you have a strong return spring installed; the springs on the carburetors themselves are often not enough to overcome the weight of a deluxe hex bar linkage, so the included auxiliary return springs are vital for safety.
