OVERVIEW
Transform your air-cooled VW Type 3 from a conservative cruiser into a high-performance machine with the EMPI Dual 44 HPMX Carburetor Kit. Specifically engineered for the unique "pancake" engine layout of the Notchback, Squareback, and Fastback, this kit addresses the specific clearance and airflow requirements that Type 3 owners face. When you are looking to unlock the true potential of your 1600cc or larger displacement engine, nothing provides the immediate throttle response and top-end power quite like a pair of 44mm HPMX carburetors. These units are designed to deliver a precise fuel-air mixture across the entire RPM range, eliminating the flat spots often associated with aged factory setups and providing the aggressive growl that every Volkswagen enthusiast craves. Whether you are daily driving your classic or prepping it for the local drag strip, this kit offers the perfect balance of reliability and raw performance.
The EMPI HPMX series has earned its reputation as a formidable alternative to the classic Weber IDF, offering exceptional casting quality and internal components that are fully interchangeable with Weber jets and spare parts. This kit is a comprehensive solution, including high-flow aluminum intake manifolds that are port-matched for Type 3 heads, and a sophisticated aircraft-style hex bar linkage that ensures perfectly synchronized throttle openings. By moving to a dual-carburetor setup, you are not just increasing fuel delivery; you are optimizing the volumetric efficiency of each cylinder bank independently. Appletree Automotive provides this kit as a complete "bolt-on" package, meaning you won''t be hunting for obscure gaskets or hardware in the middle of your installation. From the chrome-topped air cleaners to the precision-drilled jets, every component is selected to ensure your Type 3 runs cooler, faster, and smoother than ever before.

PRO TIPS
1. Prioritize Fuel Pressure Regulation
One of the most common mistakes when installing HPMX or IDF carburetors is neglecting fuel pressure. These carburetors are precision instruments that perform best at a steady 3.0 to 3.5 PSI. The stock VW mechanical fuel pump can sometimes spike above this, which leads to needle and seat failure, flooding, and erratic idling. We strongly recommend installing a high-quality fuel pressure regulator between your pump and the "T" fitting for the carburetors. Setting the pressure to exactly 3.25 PSI will ensure that your float bowls stay at the correct level, preventing the "stumbling" effect during hard cornering or heavy acceleration that many tuners misdiagnose as a jetting issue.
2. Master the Synchronization Process
To get that legendary smooth VW idle, you must synchronize the airflow between the left and right carburetor banks. Don''t rely on "eye-balling" the linkage arms. Use a high-quality snail-style Syncrometer or a Unisyn tool directly on the carburetor throats while the engine is at operating temperature. First, disconnect the linkage down-rods and adjust the idle speed screws until both carburetors pull the exact same volume of air. Only after the carburetors are balanced at idle should you reconnect the linkage, ensuring that the down-rods are adjusted so that both throttles begin to open at the exact same millisecond. This prevents the engine from "tugging" to one side, which significantly reduces vibration and improves off-the-line torque.
3. Account for the Type 3 Heat Environment
Because the Type 3 engine is enclosed under a rear deck lid, heat management is critical for carburetor performance. Ensure that your engine tin is complete and that all rubber seals around the perimeter are in good condition to prevent hot exhaust air from being sucked back into the cooling fan and over the carburetors. Additionally, when installing the hex bar linkage, ensure there is a small amount of "play" or clearance when the engine is cold. As the engine reaches operating temperature, the magnesium/aluminum case and heads will expand, which can actually tighten the linkage and cause your idle speed to hang or climb. Leaving a tiny bit of slack in the linkage rods when cold ensures that the throttle plates fully close against the idle stops once the engine is hot.
