OVERVIEW
Precision-engineered for the demanding environment of an air-cooled engine, these EMPI Dual Port Cylinder Shrouds in a professional gray finish are an absolute necessity for any serious Type 1 engine build. In the world of Volkswagen cooling, the cylinder tinsoften referred to as head shroudsare the unsung heroes that dictate the longevity of your top end. Their primary function is to capture the high-velocity air pushed down from the fan shroud and force it directly over the cooling fins of your cylinders and cylinder heads. Without a tight-fitting, high-quality set of shrouds like these, air escapes through the gaps, leading to localized hot spots, dropped valve seats, and premature engine failure. Whether you are finishing a stock restoration or building a high-performance 1600cc or 1776cc dual port powerhouse, these gray shrouds provide the correct aerodynamic profile to keep your oil temperatures stable and your heads cool.
Crafted from durable stamped steel, these shrouds are designed to withstand the constant heat cycles and vibrations inherent in the VW flat-four design. The gray finish offers a clean, industrial look that serves as an excellent base for custom paint or can be run as-is for a unique look that stands out from the standard black or chrome options. These are specifically configured for dual-port heads, featuring the necessary clearances for the wider intake manifolds and spark plug positioning found on later Type 1 engines. When you choose EMPI components from Appletree Automotive, you are investing in a legacy of air-cooled performance. These shrouds don''t just sit on the engine; they complete the pressurized cooling system, ensuring that every cubic foot of air generated by your cooling fan is utilized to its maximum potential. Don''t let your expensive engine build succumb to heat soak because of old, warped, or missing tinware.

PRO TIPS
1. Check for Proper Deflector Plate Installation
Before you bolt these shrouds down, ensure that your "coolant air deflectors" (the small pieces of tin that sit between the cylinders) are properly installed on the head studs. These gray shrouds are designed to work in tandem with those deflectors to "wrap" the air around the bottom of the cylinders. If those small plates are missing, the air will simply blow straight through, and your engine will run significantly hotter. Always verify that the tabs on the shrouds interlock correctly with the rest of your engine tin to maintain a pressurized cooling environment.
2. Pre-Fit for Intake Manifold Clearance
Due to the variations in aftermarket intake manifolds and dual-carburetor linkages, it is always a smart move to "dry fit" these shrouds before final engine assembly. While these are stamped to OEM dual-port specifications, performance manifolds (like those for Weber or Dellorto carbs) can sometimes require a slight "massage" or minor trimming of the tin for a perfect, rattle-free fit. Ensuring there is no metal-on-metal contact between the shrouds and the intake runners will prevent annoying vibrations and potential vacuum leaks caused by friction.
3. Don''t Over-Tighten the Mounting Screws
When securing these shrouds to the cylinder heads and the fan shroud, use the correct M6 hardware and be careful not to over-torque the screws. The threads in the cylinder heads can be fragile after decades of heat cycles. We recommend using a small amount of anti-seize on the mounting screws. Additionally, make sure the spark plug wire rubber boots seat firmly into the holes of these shrouds. A proper seal at the spark plug hole ensures that cooling air stays directed over the cooling fins rather than escaping through the top of the tin.
