Understanding Air Jet Influence

One of the most common misconceptions in carburetor tuning is how the air jet affects the mixture. Unlike the main jet, which affects the entire range, the air jet primarily influences the mixture at high engine speeds. A larger air jet (higher number) will lean out the mixture at high RPMs, while a smaller air jet (lower number) will richen it. If your VW feels like it is "tugging" or losing power at the top of the gear, you may need to step up or down in air jet size to find the sweet spot where the fuel curve remains flat and consistent. Always keep a log of your jetting changes to track performance gains.

The Golden Rule of Brass

Never, under any circumstances, use a metal wire or a welding tip cleaner to clear a clogged brass air jet. Because brass is a relatively soft metal, even a tiny scratch inside the orifice can significantly change the flow characteristics, effectively "drilling out" the jet to a larger size without you realizing it. If you suspect a clog from old fuel or debris, use a dedicated aerosol carburetor cleaner and high-pressure compressed air to clear the passage. If the jet is physically damaged or corroded, it is always cheaper and safer to replace it with a new EMPI jet than to risk an erratic fuel mixture.

Tuning Order Matters

When tuning your dual ICT or EPC setup, always dial in your idle jets and main jets before you start swapping air correction jets. The air jet works in conjunction with the emulsion tube to "emulsify" the fuel (mix it with air) before it reaches the venturi. If your main jet is way off, the air jet won''t be able to compensate for it.
