Front Transmission Mount Adapter, for 73 & Later Chassis
* Designed for '73 and later Type 1 chassis.
* Simplifies front mount replacement.
* Works with Urethane nose cone mounts.
OVERVIEW
If you have ever struggled with the vague shifting and excessive drivetrain movement common in late-model Volkswagens, the BUGPACK Front Transmission Mount Adapter is the definitive solution for your 1973 and later chassis. In 1973, Volkswagen redesigned the front transmission mounting system for the Type 1, moving away from the traditional two-bolt nose cone mount to a larger, complex rubber-isolated cradle. While this was intended to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness for the average commuter, it created a significant weak point for performance enthusiasts and off-roaders. Over time, the original rubber mounts degrade, leading to "wheel hop," difficult gear synchronization, and even damage to the shift coupler. This adapter plate allows you to bypass the expensive and often soft factory-style rubber mounts by converting your late-model chassis to a high-performance urethane configuration.
Crafted with precision and durability in mind, this kit from Appletree Automotive includes a heavy-duty steel adapter plate paired with high-durometer red urethane nose cone bushings. By rigidifying the connection between the transmission nose cone and the chassis frame horn, you ensure that every bit of torque is transferred to the ground rather than being lost in engine twist. This is an essential upgrade for anyone running a high-performance engine, a heavy-duty clutch, or anyone who simply wants a "click-click" shifting experience that stays consistent under load. Whether you are restoring a 1974 Super Beetle or building a rugged woods buggy on a late-model pan, this BUGPACK adapter provides the structural integrity and longevity that stock rubber components simply cannot match.

PRO TIPS
1. Inspect Your Shift Coupler Simultaneously
Whenever you are upgrading or replacing your front transmission mount, you are already working in the area of the shift rod and coupler. Because this BUGPACK adapter significantly reduces the "slop" or movement of the transmission, it will highlight any existing wear in your shift coupler or shift rod bushings. We highly recommend inspecting your rear shift coupler (located under the inspection plate beneath the rear seat) while installing this adapter. If the coupler cage or plastic bushings are worn, replace them at the same time to achieve the tightest, most precise shifting possible. Don''t forget to apply a small amount of lithium grease to the shift rod nose for smooth operation.
2. Mind the Shift Rod Alignment
Since the 1973 and later mounting system is somewhat floating, installing a more rigid adapter can slightly shift the resting height or angle of the transmission nose cone. After you have bolted the adapter and urethane mounts into place, but before you fully torque down the rear mounts, ensure that your shift rod is centered in the chassis tunnel. If the transmission is sitting too high or too low, it can cause the shift rod to bind against the tunnel exit or put undue stress on the shift coupler. A perfectly aligned transmission ensures that finding reverse and second gear remains effortless even with the stiffer urethane bushings.
3. Manage Vibration expectations
It is important to understand that urethane is significantly denser than the original factory rubber. This is exactly why it performs so wellit prevents the transmission from jumping around during hard launches or off-road maneuvers. However, this increased rigidity means that more mechanical harmonics from the engine and transaxle will be transmitted into the cabin. If you are building a pure street cruiser and want a "luxury" quiet ride, keep this in mind. For performance builds, the trade-off is more than worth it, as it eliminates the "clunk" of a failing stock mount and provides a much more connected feel between the driver and the drivetrain.
