OVERVIEW
When you are building a high-performance transaxle for your air-cooled Volkswagen, the integrity of your ring and pinion set depends entirely on the hardware holding it together. These EMPI Long 9mm Ring Gear Bolts are engineered specifically for IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) transaxles and are the gold standard for enthusiasts upgrading to a Super Diff or refreshing a heavy-duty street gearbox. In the world of air-cooled performance, the differential is under immense stress; using standard or fatigued hardware can lead to catastrophic failure, sheared bolts, and a destroyed transmission case. These bolts feature a 12.9 grade rating, ensuring they provide the maximum tensile strength required to handle the torque loads of modified engines and aggressive launches.
At Appletree Automotive, we know that precision is everything when it comes to the VW drivetrain. These "long" versions of the 9mm bolt are specifically designed to provide extra thread engagement, which is absolutely critical when installing aftermarket Super Diffs or thicker heavy-duty flanged components. Sold individually to allow for custom configurations or simple repairs, these bolts are a mandatory component for any serious Type 1, Type 3, or Ghia build. Don''t risk your entire investment by reusing old, stretched, or mystery-grade hardware. Secure your ring gear with the reliability of EMPI high-strength fasteners and drive with the peace of mind that your differential is locked down tight.

PRO TIPS
1. Always Use a Cross-Pattern Torque Sequence
When installing these 9mm ring gear bolts, it is vital to tighten them in a star or cross-pattern to ensure the ring gear seats perfectly flat against the differential flange. If you tighten them in a circular order, you risk "cocking" the gear slightly, which will lead to improper gear mesh and premature wear of your ring and pinion. We recommend a final torque value consistent with 12.9 grade 9mm fasteners (typically around 44-47 ft-lbs), but always verify against your specific transaxle manual or Super Diff manufacturer instructions. Consistent tension is the key to preventing gear whine and hardware fatigue.
2. Threadlocker is Non-Negotiable
Inside a transaxle, vibration and thermal expansion are constant. Because these bolts are submerged in gear oil and subjected to immense centrifugal force, you must use a high-quality thread-locking compound. We recommend using a high-strength (Red) or medium-strength (Blue) threadlocker depending on your service interval plans. Ensure the threads on both the bolt and the differential are completely clean and free of gear oil using a brake cleaner or solvent before application; otherwise, the locker won''t bond correctly, and the bolt could eventually back out, causing total transmission failure.
3. Verify Clearance After Installation
Since these are the "Long" style bolts, it is imperative that you perform a "dry fit" rotation of the differential once the bolts are torqued down. In some tight-clearance IRS cases or when using specific aftermarket gear sets, the extra length of the bolt can potentially interfere with the internal webbing of the transaxle housing. Rotate the assembly 360 degrees by hand to ensure there is no contact between the bolt heads or the protruding threads and the case. It is much easier to identify a clearance issue on the bench than it is once the engine is mated and the car is on the road.
