OVERVIEW
When it comes to restoring the rear suspension geometry of your air-cooled Volkswagen, there is no name more trusted in the industry than Sway-A-Way. These IRS Spring Plates are engineered to be the ultimate stock replacement for your aging, fatigued, or bent factory units. Over decades of use, original spring plates can lose their structural integrity or become scarred from metal-on-metal contact when bushings fail. By upgrading to these heavy-duty Sway-A-Way plates, you are ensuring that your Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) maintains the precise alignment and leverage required to keep your tires planted. Whether you are building a daily driver, a weekend cruiser, or a mild off-road machine, these plates provide the strength and reliability that Appletree Auto customers have come to expect for their classic VW projects.
Designed specifically to accommodate the standard 26-9/16 inch torsion bars, these plates are a critical link in your rear suspension system. The IRS configuration is famous for its superior handling characteristics compared to the earlier swing axle design, but it is only as good as the hardware connecting the torsion bars to the trailing arms. These plates are manufactured with tight tolerances to ensure a perfect spline fit, preventing the "clunking" or "slop" often found in inferior, budget-grade replacements. By pairing these with high-quality torsion bars and fresh bushings, you will notice a significant improvement in how your Beetle, Super Beetle, or Ghia handles corners and absorbs road imperfections. Don''t settle for questionable swap-meet parts when you can install a brand-new pair of Sway-A-Way plates and drive with total confidence.

PRO TIPS
1. Prioritize Bushing Quality and Sizing
One of the most common mistakes we see at Appletree Auto is trying to reuse old, dry-rotted rubber bushings or purchasing the wrong size replacements. These Sway-A-Way plates require specific sizes: a 1-3/4 inch I.D. for the inner bushing and a 1-7/8 inch I.D. for the outer. We highly recommend upgrading to high-quality urethane bushings during this installation. Urethane provides a firmer feel and won''t deflect under load like soft rubber, which keeps your rear-end alignment much more consistent during hard cornering. Always use a generous amount of silicone-based grease on urethane bushings to prevent the annoying squeaking that can occur with dry installation.
2. Use an Angle Finder for Precision Indexing
Setting your ride height isn''t just about "eyeballing" the splines. Because the inner and outer splines on a VW torsion bar have different counts (40 inner/44 outer), you can make very fine adjustments to your ride height by "hunting" the splines. Before you disassemble your old setup, use a digital angle finder to measure the "unloaded" angle of your current spring plate. When installing these new Sway-A-Way plates, use that same angle as your baseline. This ensures that your car sits level from side to side and prevents the common "VW lean" that occurs when the torsion bars aren''t indexed identically on both the driver and passenger sides.
3. Inspect and Lubricate Your Torsion Bar Splines
While you have the suspension apart to install these new plates, it is the perfect time to inspect your torsion bars for any signs of hairline cracks or severe rust pitting. Rust creates "stress risers" that can lead to a snapped bar under heavy loads. Clean the splines on both the torsion bar and inside the new spring plates thoroughly with a wire brush. Before final assembly, apply a high-quality anti-seize lubricant or a heavy-duty waterproof grease to the splines. This prevents the metal from seizing together over time, making future adjustments or maintenance much easier, and it protects the high-tolerance fitment of your new Sway-A-Way hardware.
