Upgrade Your Air-Cooled Ride with Sway-A-Way High-Performance Leaf Springs
When it comes to the front-end suspension of your classic Volkswagen, the leaf springs are the literal backbone of your handling and ride height. Over decades of use, factory spring packs fatigue, lose their tension, and eventually lead to a sagging nose or a mushy, unpredictable steering feel. These Sway-A-Way (SAW) Ball Joint Leaf Springs are engineered to solve those issues while providing a significant performance boost. Manufactured from high-grade chromoly steel, these springs are designed to withstand the rigors of both spirited street driving and light off-road use without the sagging associated with inferior mild-steel replacements. By increasing the spring rate by 15% over stock, you gain a much-needed level of firmness that reduces nose-dive during heavy braking and keeps your Beetle or Ghia planted through the corners.
Choosing the right spring rate is critical for maintaining the balance between comfort and performance. The 15% stiffness increase is widely considered the ''''sweet spot'''' for most air-cooled enthusiasts. It is stiff enough to handle the extra load of a heavy-duty bumper or upgraded disc brakes, yet compliant enough to ensure your teeth won''t rattle when you hit a pothole. These are not your average generic springs; they are precision-crafted by Sway-A-Way, a legend in the off-road and VW racing community. Each pack is designed for a standard-width ball joint beam, providing the reliability and longevity that Appletree Auto customers demand. Whether you are restoring a weekend cruiser or building a high-performance street machine, these chromoly springs are the definitive choice for a rock-solid front end.

Pro Tips from the Appletree Garage
1. The Power of Two: One of the most common mistakes we see is folks ordering just one pack. Remember, a standard VW front beam has two torsion tubesan upper and a lower. Each tube requires its own set of leaf springs. To fully refresh your front suspension and ensure even ride height and handling, you must purchase two of these 5-packs. Installing new springs in only one tube while leaving fatigued springs in the other will lead to erratic handling and uneven spring loading, which can eventually damage your trailing arms.
2. Grease is Your Best Friend: When you are sliding these chromoly leaves into your beam, do not be shy with the grease. We highly recommend using a high-quality, water-resistant Moly grease. Coat each leaf individually before sliding them into the stack. This reduces internal friction between the leaves, prevents "spring squeak," and protects the metal from moisture that can get trapped inside the beam. Properly lubricated springs react faster to road imperfections and provide a much smoother dampening effect.
3. Inspect Your Grub Screws and Dimples: Before finalizing your installation, ensure that the center dimple on the leaf pack aligns perfectly with the square-head grub screw (lock screw) in the center of your beam. If these aren''t perfectly indexed, the springs can shift side-to-side, leading to a catastrophic loss of steering control or damaged trailing arms. Always use a new lock nut on your grub screws and check the torque after the first 50 miles of driving to ensure everything has seated properly in the beam housing.
