OVERVIEW
When it comes to building a high-performance off-road machine or a precision-handling street Beetle, the steering system is absolutely no place to cut corners. The EMPI 5/8-36 spline universal joint is the professional''s choice for connecting aftermarket steering columns to high-ratio rack-and-pinion units. Whether you are navigating technical trails in a woods buggy or hitting the dunes in a classic sand rail, this U-joint provides the necessary articulation and torque transfer required for aggressive driving. Its robust construction ensures that there is zero slop in your steering wheel, giving you the tactile feedback you need to keep your front wheels pointed exactly where you want them, regardless of the terrain.
Engineered for extreme durability and long-term reliability, this universal joint features a precision-machined 36-spline pattern on both ends, making it a versatile component for a wide range of custom steering configurations. The compact design allows for maximum clearance in tight engine bays or crowded chassis tunnels, which is often a major hurdle in custom air-cooled VW projects. By utilizing high-strength forged materials, EMPI has created a part that resists the shearing forces and constant vibrations common in off-road environments. If you are converting your vintage Volkswagen to a modern rack-and-pinion setup, this U-joint is an essential link in your steering chain that promises a secure, dependable fitment when matched with the correct 5/8-inch shafts.
FITMENT
This universal joint is designed for custom applications and steering conversions. It is commonly used in the following vehicles and setups:
- VW Dune Buggies: Ideal for Manx-style bodies and custom fiberglass buggies using aftermarket columns.
- Sand Rails: Fits most mid-engine and rear-engine sand rail chassis utilizing rack-and-pinion steering.
- VW Type 1 Beetle: Used in custom street builds where the stock steering box has been replaced with a rack.
- VW Karmann Ghia: Perfect for performance builds requiring updated steering geometry.
- Woods Buggies: Built to withstand the rigors of tight, technical trail riding.
- Generic Applications: Compatible with any 5/8-36 spline steering shaft or steering rack input.

PRO TIPS
1. Always Phase Your U-Joints Correctly
If your steering system requires the use of two universal joints, it is critical that they are installed "in phase" with one another. This means the yokes at both ends of the intermediate shaft must be aligned in the same plane. If they are out of phase, it can cause a binding sensation or a "lumpy" feel in the steering wheel as you turn. Take the time to align the splines perfectly before final tightening to ensure the smoothest steering response possible.
2. Secure Your Fasteners with Thread Locker
Steering components are subject to constant vibration, which can cause set screws or pinch bolts to back out over time. When installing the EMPI 5/8-36 U-Joint, we strongly recommend using a high-strength thread-locking compound (such as Red Loctite) on all mounting hardware. For added safety in off-road racing or extreme conditions, many builders will also "dimple" the steering shaft where the set screw lands to provide a mechanical seat that prevents the shaft from ever sliding out of the joint.
3. Check Clearance Throughout Suspension Travel
Before you head out for your first drive, you must check the steering clearance through the entire range of motion. Jack up the front of the vehicle and turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock while cycling the suspension up and down. You are looking for any point where the U-joint might bind against the frame, body, or fuel lines. Even a tiny amount of contact can lead to catastrophic steering failure. Ensure there is at least a 1/4-inch gap between the U-joint and any stationary parts of the chassis at all times.
