OVERVIEW
When you''re deep into a full restoration or a custom air-cooled project, it''s the smallest details that often determine the long-term reliability of your vehicle. These Allstar Performance 1/4-inch rubber grommets are an absolute necessity for anyone routing electrical wiring, vacuum lines, or small fluid hoses through the steel panels of a Volkswagen Beetle, Karmann Ghia, or Bus. The sharp, stamped edges of vintage VW sheet metal are notorious for vibrating against wires and eventually slicing through insulation, leading to short circuits that can be difficult to track down or, worse, lead to electrical fires. By installing these high-quality rubber insulators, you provide a soft, protective cushion that isolates your critical components from the abrasive edges of the chassis and firewall.
Each pack contains ten premium-grade grommets designed specifically to fit panels up to 1/16-inch (.062") thick, which is the standard gauge for the majority of air-cooled VW body sections and interior bulkheads. Whether you are running a new wiring harness for a set of off-road lights on your Baja Bug, installing a mechanical oil pressure gauge line, or simply replacing dry-rotted factory seals in your Type 3, these grommets offer a professional finish and a weather-resistant seal. Allstar Performance is a trusted name in the racing and hot rod industry, ensuring that these rubber components won''t prematurely crack or degrade when exposed to the heat and oils commonly found in a Volkswagen''s engine bay or luggage compartment.
FITMENT
These universal 1/4-inch grommets are essential for a wide variety of air-cooled applications and custom builds, including but not limited to:

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Hole Sizing for a Tight Seal
To ensure these 1/4-inch grommets stay seated and provide a dust-proof seal, it is critical to drill the correct pilot hole in your sheet metal. For a standard 1/4-inch ID (Inner Diameter) grommet, the mounting hole in the panel usually needs to be slightly larger than the internal diameter to accommodate the rubber shoulder. We highly recommend using a step-drill bit (often called a Uni-Bit) when working on VW body panels. This allows you to create a perfectly round, burr-free hole. Always test-fit the grommet in a scrap piece of metal first to find the exact step on your drill bit that provides a snug, "pop-in" fit without the grommet feeling loose or spinning freely.
2. Use Lubricant for Easier Installation
Installing fresh, tight-fitting rubber grommets into a firewall can be a frustrating task, especially in tight corners like the area behind a Beetle''s dashboard or near the transaxle. To make the process effortless, apply a small amount of dish soap or a water-based silicone lubricant to the groove of the grommet before pressing it into the hole. This allows the rubber to slide over the sheet metal edge without tearing. Avoid using petroleum-based greases, as these can eventually break down the rubber compound over several years. Once the lubricant dries, the grommet will "lock" into place and remain secure even under heavy vibration.
3. Protect Your Investment with Wire Loom
While the grommet protects the wire from the metal edge, the wire itself can still rub against the inside of the grommet over thousands of miles of driving. For the ultimate "pro-build" setup, we recommend wrapping your 1/4-inch wire or hose in a small section of braided wire loom or heat-shrink tubing at the point where it passes through the grommet. This creates a double layer of protection. Furthermore, always ensure there is a small amount of "service loop" or slack on both sides of the grommet. This prevents the wire from being pulled tight against the rubber, which can cause the grommet to distort or pull out of the panel during engine torque or chassis flex.
