OVERVIEW
When it comes to maintaining the heartbeat of your vintage air-cooled Volkswagen, the ignition system is often the first place to look for lost performance. These EMPI 7mm Grey Spark Plug Wires are engineered to provide a high-quality, stock-style replacement that honors the original aesthetics of your engine bay while delivering modern reliability. Proudly made in the United States, these wires are crafted to meet the rigorous demands of the flat-four engine. Unlike generic universal kits, these wires feature the correct lengths and terminal ends specifically tailored for the VW upright engine configuration. Whether you are performing a routine tune-up or finishing a full concourse-style restoration, these grey wires offer that period-correct look that purists crave without sacrificing the conductivity and insulation needed for a crisp, consistent spark. Maintaining a strong electrical path from the distributor to the plugs is essential for efficient combustion, easy cold starts, and a smooth idle, making this set a fundamental upgrade for any daily driver or weekend cruiser.
One of the standout features of this EMPI wire set is the inclusion of the large, high-density plug seals. In an air-cooled engine, the spark plug wires do more than just carry voltage; they act as a critical barrier for the engine''s cooling system. These oversized boots are designed to seat perfectly into the cylinder head tin, effectively sealing off the spark plug holes. This prevents high-pressure cooling air from escaping and, more importantly, keeps road grime, moisture, and debris from falling into the cooling fins or entering the combustion chamber during a plug change. By keeping the moisture out, you significantly reduce the risk of terminal corrosion and "arcing" where the spark jumps to the engine tin rather than reaching the plug. This 5-piece kit includes four spark plug leads and one coil-to-distributor wire, ensuring your entire secondary ignition circuit is refreshed and protected against the harsh heat cycles inherent to the Volkswagen Boxer engine design.

PRO TIPS
1. Seal Integrity and Cooling Efficiency
Always ensure that the large rubber boots are fully seated into the engine tin holes. In an air-cooled VW, the fan shroud forces air over the cylinders to keep them cool. If these boots are torn or not pushed in all the way, you lose "static pressure" within the tin, which can lead to localized hot spots on your cylinder heads. When installing these EMPI wires, give each boot a firm press and a slight twist to ensure it has created an airtight seal against the metal tinware. This small step ensures your engine stays as cool as the engineers intended.
2. Use Dielectric Grease for Longevity
Before snapping the boots onto the spark plugs and the distributor cap, apply a small dab of dielectric silicone grease to the inside of each rubber boot. This serves two critical purposes: it prevents the rubber from "vulcanizing" or sticking to the ceramic of the spark plug over time due to engine heat, and it creates an extra moisture barrier. This makes future removal much easier and prevents the wire terminal from pulling out of the boot when you try to perform your next tune-up. It also helps prevent voltage leaks in humid or rainy conditions.
3. Proper Wire Routing to Prevent Arcing
Never let your spark plug wires rest directly against the metal engine tin or the exhaust system. While the 7mm insulation on these EMPI wires is robust, the constant vibration of a Volkswagen engine can eventually chafe the wire jacket against sharp metal edges. Use the factory-style wire plastic looms or clips to keep the wires organized and suspended away from hot or vibrating surfaces. Proper routing not only makes the engine bay look professional but also prevents "cross-firing," where the electrical induction from one wire interferes with another, causing a noticeable engine misfire.
