As a general rule of thumb for air-cooled VWs, start with 6 to 8 discs for a standard 1600cc engine. If you are running a high-performance 2110cc or 2332cc stroker engine, you will likely need to add more discs (up to 12 or more) to prevent excessive backpressure that can cause your cylinder head temperatures to spike. Preventing Hardware Seizure
