OVERVIEW
When you are building a high-performance 1835cc or 1914cc air-cooled engine, the difference between a motor that merely runs and a motor that dominates the street or the dunes is found in the quality of the cylinder seal. These Total Seal 92mm Gapless 2nd Rings represent the pinnacle of piston ring technology for the Volkswagen platform. In a traditional engine setup, the end gaps of standard compression rings allow combustion gases to leak into the crankcasea phenomenon known as blow-by. This not only robs your engine of precious horsepower and torque but also contaminates your oil with carbon and unburnt fuel, leading to higher operating temperatures and premature wear. By utilizing Total Seal''s patented gapless design for the second groove, you effectively provide a 360-degree seal that prevents those gases from escaping, ensuring that every ounce of combustion energy is directed downward to the crankshaft where it belongs.
The benefits of upgrading to Total Seal rings extend far beyond simple power gains. For air-cooled enthusiasts, managing heat is the eternal struggle. By reducing blow-by, you significantly lower crankcase pressure and oil temperatures, which is vital for the longevity of your Type 1, Type 2, or Type 3 engine. These rings are specifically engineered for 92mm bore cylinders, making them the perfect choice for the classic 1835cc thick-wall or 1914cc stroker configurations. Whether you are building a weekend cruiser, a dedicated drag racer, or a rugged off-road rail, these rings provide unmatched consistency in cylinder pressure. When you install these, you aren''t just putting in another set of rings; you are investing in a more efficient, cooler-running, and more powerful Volkswagen engine that will maintain its compression levels far longer than any standard ring set ever could.

PRO TIPS
1. Prioritize Proper Cylinder Honing
To get the most out of your Total Seal rings, the cylinder wall finish is absolutely critical. These rings require a fresh, sharp cross-hatch pattern to seat correctly. If you are installing these in used cylinders, even if they look "fine," you must deglaze them with a 220 to 280 grit flex-hone. This creates the microscopic valleys necessary to hold oil and allow the ring material to "mate" with the cylinder wall. Without a proper hone, the rings may never fully seat, which can lead to oil consumption and prevent the gapless technology from reaching its full potential. Always clean the cylinders with hot soapy water until a white paper towel comes out spotless before assembly.
2. Precise Installation and Orientation
The Total Seal gapless ring is a two-piece assembly consisting of a primary ring and a smaller rail that creates the seal. When installing these, pay very close attention to the "Top" markings. The ring must be installed with the beveled or marked side facing the top of the piston. Furthermore, you must stagger the gaps of the internal rail and the main ring according to the included instructionsusually 180 degrees apart from each other. Failure to orient these correctly can lead to "ring flutter" at high RPMs. Use a high-quality piston ring expander tool to avoid over-stressing or snapping the rings during the installation onto the 92mm pistons.
3. The Break-In Process is Vital
Don''t use synthetic oil during the initial break-in period of your new Total Seal rings. Synthetic oils are often "too slippery" and can prevent the friction necessary for the rings to seat against the cylinder walls. Use a high-quality mineral-based break-in oil with high ZDDP (zinc) content. Once the engine is fired up, avoid prolonged idling. You want to put the engine under varying loads as soon as possible to create the cylinder pressure needed to push the rings outward against the walls. A few brisk accelerations and decelerations (engine braking) in second or third gear will help the rings find their "home" quickly. Once seated, you will notice a significant increase in cranking compression and a much cleaner-running crankcase.
