        The FK-97 is engineered for builders who are pushing the absolute limits of the Type 1 engine platform. With an advertised duration of 328 degrees and a duration of 287 degrees at .050-inch lift, this cam is designed to move the power band significantly higher into the RPM range, typically excelling between 4,500 and 8,500+ RPM. To harness this level of performance, your engine must be equipped with high-flow competition cylinder heads, a high-octane fuel system, and a compression ratio that can support such an aggressive overlap.         FITMENT

        The Engle FK-97 Camshaft is designed for Type 1, 2, and 3 air-cooled Volkswagen engines. While it fits the physical dimensions of these cases, it is strictly intended for competition use. Recommended fitment includes:

        • Volkswagen Beetle: 1950 through 1979 (Performance Race Builds)
        • Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1956 through 1974 (Drag/Track Only)
        • Volkswagen Bus/Transporter: 1950 through 1971 (Type 1 Engine Configurations)
        • Volkswagen Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback): 1962 through 1973
        • Volkswagen Thing (Type 181): 1973 through 1974
        • Custom Applications: Sand Rails, Dune Buggies, and Dragsters utilizing Type 1 engine cases.

        PRO TIPS

        1. Critical Valvetrain Clearance Checks

        When you are running a camshaft with .622-inch lift like the FK-97, clearances become incredibly tight. You MUST perform a mock-up assembly to check for three specific areas: coil bind in your valve springs, retainer-to-valve-guide clearance, and piston-to-valve clearance. At this level of lift, standard components will fail or collide. We highly recommend using long-reach valves and high-performance dual or triple valve springs that are rated for this specific lift range. Additionally, ensure your pushrod tubes are clearanced, as the extreme angle of the pushrods with high-ratio rockers can cause rubbing against the tube walls, leading to catastrophic failure.

        2. Professional Break-In Procedure

        A flat-tappet camshaft''s life is determined in the first 20 minutes of operation. Before installation, liberally coat the cam lobes and the faces of your NEW lifters with a high-pressure molybdenum disulfide (moly) assembly lube. NEVER reuse old lifters on a new cam. Once the engine fires, immediately bring the RPM up to 2,0002,500 and vary it slightly for 20 to 30 minutes. This ensures proper oil splash lubrication for the cam-to-lifter interface. Use a dedicated break-in oil with high levels of ZDDP (Zinc and Phosphorus) to prevent the lobes from wiping. After the break-in period, change the oil and filter to remove any assembly debris before heading to the track.

        3. Optimizing the Power Band

        The FK-97 is a high-RPM beast. To get the most out of this camshaft, your engine should be built with a high compression ratio, typically 12:1 or higher depending on your fuel choice (Race Gas, E85, or Methanol). Pairing this cam with small carburetors or restrictive intake ports will result in poor performance. We recommend using 48mm or larger IDA-style carburetors or a high-flow EFI throttle body setup. Additionally, your exhaust system must be a stepped competition header to help scavenge the cylinders effectively at high RPM. Remember, this cam is designed to "live" at the top end of the tachometer; ensure your bottom end (crank, rods, and fly-wheel) is balanced and forged to handle the stress.
