OVERVIEW
When you''re under your classic Volkswagen wrestling with a starter replacement, the last thing you want to deal with is a bolt that spins freely while you''re trying to tighten the nut from the engine compartment. This D-Shaped Starter Bolt is the engineered solution that makes a notoriously difficult two-person job into a simple solo task. Designed with a specific flat edge on the bolt head, this hardware indexes perfectly against the starter motor housing, effectively locking itself in place against the starter body. This allows you to focus your efforts on the 17mm nut inside the engine bay without needing a second set of hands or a clumsy pair of locking pliers clamped onto the bolt head under the car. It is a small but vital piece of hardware that ensures your starter is mounted securely to the transaxle bellhousing, preventing the vibration and misalignment that can lead to chipped flywheel teeth or premature starter solenoid failure.
At Appletree Automotive, we know that using the correct hardware is the difference between a professional-grade restoration and a "make-it-fit" repair that fails down the road. This 10mm thread starter bolt is manufactured to meet or exceed original equipment specifications, featuring a high-tensile steel construction that can withstand the high-torque environment and heat cycles of the VW drivetrain. Over decades, original factory bolts often become pitted, rusted, or rounded off, leading to difficult removals and potential electrical grounding issues. Replacing your old, fatigued hardware with this fresh, zinc-plated D-bolt ensures that your starter remains rigid and properly aligned for every turn of the key. Whether you are building a high-performance sand rail, a daily-driver Beetle, or a show-quality Karmann Ghia, this bolt provides the peace of mind that comes with using the exact component the factory intended for the job.

PRO TIPS
Proper Indexing is Key
Before you tighten the nut from the engine side, ensure that the flat side of the "D" head is flush against the starter motor body. If it is not seated correctly, the bolt will not lock, and you risk rounding off the indexing shoulder or damaging the starter housing itself. Always reach up and feel the bolt head to confirm it has "dropped" into its recessed home against the starter before you begin applying significant torque to the nut in the engine compartment.
Prevent Galvanic Corrosion
Since this steel bolt passes through an aluminum transaxle housing, it is highly susceptible to galvanic corrosion, which is why old bolts often "seize" into the case. We strongly recommend applying a small amount of high-quality nickel or silver-based anti-seize to the unthreaded shank of the bolt. This ensures that the next time you need to remove the starter, the bolt slides out effortlessly rather than requiring a hammer and drift, which can crack the fragile magnesium or aluminum bellhousing.
Check Your Grounding Path
The starter motor relies on a solid mechanical connection to the transaxle to complete its electrical circuit. If your bellhousing or the starter flange is covered in thick paint, powder coating, or heavy grease, the starter may spin slowly or not at all. While this bolt provides the clamping force, ensure the mating surfaces are clean and bare metal. A fresh, clean D-bolt provides a much better electrical path than a rusted original, ensuring your 6V or 12V system delivers maximum amperage to the starter motor.
