Precision Tuning for Peak Performance: The EMPI Brosol/Solex .65 Idle Jet
When it comes to the heart of your air-cooled engine''s drivability, nothing is more critical than the idle circuit of your Solex or Brosol carburetor. The idle jet is often misunderstood as only being responsible for the engine at a standstill, but in reality, this precision-machined brass component controls the fuel mixture for nearly 80% of your typical street driving. If your Volkswagen is experiencing a "lean stumble," hesitation during acceleration, or a stubborn flat spot when transitioning from the idle circuit to the main circuit, stepping up to this .65 size jet is often the silver bullet. At Appletree Automotive, we know that modern ethanol-blended fuels burn leaner and hotter than the fuels available when these engines were designed, making a slightly larger idle jet like the .65 an essential upgrade for maintaining a smooth, reliable power band in today''s driving conditions.
Engineered by EMPI to exacting tolerances, these Brosol/Solex idle jets are designed for enthusiasts who refuse to settle for "good enough" performance. Whether you are running a stock 1600cc dual port or a mildly built 1641cc engine with a 34 PICT-3 carburetor, having the right jetting is the difference between a frustrating drive and a seamless cruising experience. These jets feature high-quality brass construction that resists corrosion and ensures the orifice diameter remains consistent over years of heat cycles and fuel exposure. By installing a .65 idle jet, you are providing your engine with the extra fuel enrichment needed to overcome the cooling demands of an air-cooled flat-four, ensuring that your Beetle, Karmann Ghia, or Bus runs cooler and responds instantly to your right foot.
Vehicle Fitment and Carburetor Compatibility
This .65 idle jet is designed for use with standard Solex and Brosol carburetors commonly found on air-cooled Volkswagens. Please verify your carburetor model before ordering to ensure the correct thread pitch and jet style.

Pro Tips from the Appletree Workbench
Tip 1: Solving the Modern Fuel Dilemma
If you are running modern pump gas containing 10% ethanol (E10), your engine is naturally running leaner than it would on pure gasoline. We frequently find that a stock .55 or .60 idle jet is simply too small for today''s fuel, leading to overheating and "popping" through the carburetor. Upgrading to this .65 jet provides the necessary enrichment to compensate for ethanol, resulting in a much cooler-running cylinder head and a smoother transition into the higher RPM ranges. Don''t let a lean condition cook your valves; give the engine the fuel it craves.
Tip 2: The "Cleanliness is Godliness" Rule
The orifice in a .65 jet is incredibly smallroughly the thickness of a few human hairs. Even a microscopic speck of rust from an old fuel tank or a tiny flake of rubber from a deteriorating fuel line can completely clog this jet, causing your engine to die every time you take your foot off the gas. Always install a high-quality fuel filter before the carburetor and, if you experience a sudden loss of idle, remove this jet and blow it out with compressed air. Never use a wire or a needle to clean it, as you will scratch the brass and ruin the precision flow characteristics.
Tip 3: Dialing in the Volume Control Screw
Once you install the .65 idle jet, you will likely need to re-adjust your carburetor''s Volume Control Screw (the larger screw on the side of the 34 PICT-3). Because the jet is now delivering more fuel, you may find that the screw needs to be turned in slightly more than it was with the previous smaller jet to achieve the "sweet spot." Aim for the highest possible idle RPM through screw adjustment, then back it off slightly until the idle is smooth and steady. This ensures that your transition circuit is primed and ready to deliver power the moment the throttle butterfly opens.
