OVERVIEW
Transform your classic Volkswagen''s stance and stopping power simultaneously with the EMPI Drop Spindle Disc Brake Kit. This premium performance upgrade is designed specifically for late-model ball joint front ends, providing an aggressive 2.5-inch drop without compromising your suspension geometry or ride quality. By moving the axle stub upward on the spindle casting, this kit lowers the vehicle''s center of gravity while maintaining full suspension travel, ensuring that you get that sought-after "Cal-Look" profile without the harsh, bouncy ride often associated with simply cranking down an adjustable beam. Whether you are navigating tight canyon curves or cruising the local strip, the improved aerodynamics and lower profile provide a significant boost in both aesthetics and handling stability.
Beyond the lowered height, the true heart of this kit lies in its professional-grade braking components. Featuring vibrant Red Wilwood billet aluminum 4-piston calipers and high-performance vented rotors, this system offers a massive leap in safety over original drum brakes or standard single-piston disc setups. The vented rotors are engineered to dissipate heat rapidly, virtually eliminating brake fade during spirited driving or heavy mountain descents. Every component, from the precision-machined spindles to the premium SKF bearings and stainless steel reinforced lines, has been selected to provide the ultimate in reliability and performance. This isn't just a cosmetic upgrade; it's a comprehensive engineering solution that brings modern braking technology to the timeless design of the air-cooled Beetle.

PRO TIPS
1. Mastering Bearing Packing and Race Installation
The longevity of your new disc brake kit depends heavily on the initial setup of the wheel bearings. When installing the SKF bearing races into the new vented rotors, always use a dedicated race driver tool rather than a hammer and punch to avoid scarring the hardened surface. Before assembly, "palm-pack" the bearings with a high-quality, high-temperature disc brake grease until the grease is forced through the rollers and out the other side. This ensures there are no dry spots. When tightening the spindle nut, tighten it while spinning the rotor to seat the bearings, then back it off just enough so the thrust washer can be moved with a screwdriver using finger pressure. This "just-perceptible" play prevents overheating and premature bearing failure once the components reach operating temperature.
2. Critical Wheel Clearance and Offset Check
Because this kit utilizes high-performance Wilwood calipers, clearance is tighter than a standard factory setup. You MUST use 15-inch or larger wheels. Before final assembly, it is highly recommended to do a "dry fit" of your wheel over the rotor and caliper assembly. Check for clearance not just on the inner diameter of the rim, but also between the face of the caliper and the back of the wheel spokes. If you are running aftermarket aluminum wheels, you may need a small spacer or a specific offset to ensure the caliper doesn't make contact. Additionally, ensure your 14x1.5mm lug bolts are the correct length; bolts that are too long can pass through the rotor and strike the spindle or internal components, causing catastrophic damage during the first rotation.
3. Proper Brake Bleeding and Pad Bedding
To get the firmest pedal feel and maximum performance from your Wilwood 4-piston calipers, you must follow a specific bleeding and bedding procedure. Always start bleeding at the wheel furthest from the master cylinder (usually the passenger rear, then driver rear, then passenger front, then driver front). Since these are multi-piston calipers, ensure you bleed both the inner and outer bleed screws on each caliper to remove all trapped air pockets. Once the system is bled, you must "bed-in" the pads. This involves performing several controlled stops from 40mph down to 10mph in quick succession to transfer a thin layer of friction material from the pads to the rotors. Don''t come to a complete stop during this process, as it can cause uneven material transfer and lead to brake pulsation. Proper bedding ensures a quiet, powerful, and long-lasting brake system.
