        OVERVIEW

Upgrading your air-cooled VW''s stopping power is the single most important safety modification you can make, and this IAP Disc Brake Kit makes the transition from antiquated drum brakes to modern disc performance seamless. Designed specifically for ball joint front ends, this kit eliminates the frustrating "brake fade" and unpredictable pulling associated with traditional drum setups, providing consistent, reliable braking under all driving conditions. The standout feature of this kit is the double-drilled rotors, which provide the ultimate flexibility for custom wheel fitment. By offering both the 5 on 4.5-inch Ford/Mopar and 5 on 4.75-inch Chevy/GM bolt patterns, you are no longer limited to standard VW wheels; you can now mount a massive variety of classic American muscle car wheels or modern aftermarket alloys directly to your Beetle or Ghia without the need for sketchy, wheel-spaced adapters.

What truly sets this kit apart from others on the market is its "no-spindle-required" design. Many disc brake conversions require you to swap out your entire spindle assembly for dedicated disc versions, which adds significant cost and labor to your restoration project. This kit is precision-engineered to bolt directly onto your factory drum brake spindles, making it one of the most cost-effective and straightforward upgrades available in the industry. Each component, from the heavy-duty cast rotors to the floating calipers, is manufactured to rigorous standards to ensure a perfect fit and long-lasting durability. Whether you are building a high-performance street machine, a weekend cruiser, or a reliable daily driver, the increased clamping force and superior heat dissipation of this disc brake system will give you the confidence to navigate modern traffic safely while opening up a world of aesthetic possibilities for your classic Volkswagen.

        PRO TIPS

        1. Verify Wheel Clearance and Backspacing

When switching to Ford or Chevy bolt patterns, you are often moving to wheels designed for American cars which may have different offsets and backspacing requirements than traditional VW wheels. Before finalizing your wheel choice, measure the distance between the caliper face and the inner spokes of the wheel. Because this kit uses your existing drum spindles, the track width remains very close to stock, but certain deep-dish American wheels may require a small spacer or a specific offset to clear the caliper body. Always mock up the fitment before mounting tires to ensure there is no interference during full-lock turns.

        2. Spindle Preparation is Critical

Since this kit bolts to your original drum spindles, it is vital that you thoroughly clean and inspect your spindle surfaces before installation. Use a wire brush or emery cloth to remove decades of grease, rust, and road grime from the mounting bosses where the caliper bracket attaches. Any debris left on the mounting surface can cause the bracket to sit at an angle, leading to uneven pad wear or "spongy" brake feel. Additionally, check your spindle snouts for scoring or wear; if the bearing surfaces are damaged, now is the perfect time to address those issues before installing your new high-performance rotors.

        3. Master Cylinder and Residual Valves

When converting from drums to discs, your hydraulic requirements change. Drum brakes typically utilize a residual pressure valve (usually 10 lbs) in the master cylinder to keep the shoes close to the drum. Disc brakes, however, require very little to no residual pressure (usually 2 lbs or none) to prevent the pads from dragging and overheating the rotors. If you are still using a drum-style master cylinder, you may need to swap to a disc-brake-specific master cylinder or remove the residual valve for the front circuit. Always perform a complete system bleed using high-quality DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid to ensure the firmest pedal feel and maximum safety.
