        OVERVIEW

Upgrading your air-cooled Volkswagen from antiquated drum brakes to a modern disc brake system is the single most important safety improvement you can make. This EMPI Ball Joint Front Disc Brake Kit is specifically engineered for the 1966 through 1977 Standard Beetle, providing the consistent, fade-free stopping power that modern traffic demands. By eliminating the constant need for shoe adjustments and the unpredictable pull often associated with drum brakes, this kit transforms your driving experience. Whether you are navigating steep descents or sudden highway stops, the increased clamping force and superior heat dissipation of these rotors ensure your VW stops straight and true every single time. As a master specialist, I cannot stress enough how much this kit improves the confidence you feel behind the wheel of a classic Bug.

What sets this particular kit apart is its versatility and custom wheel compatibility. This package features double-drilled rotors, offering both the Porsche 5x130mm pattern and the classic 5x4.75-inch Chevy pattern. This opens up a massive world of wheel options, allowing you to run iconic American-style wheels or high-end European rollers without the need for sketchy adapters. Please note that this kit is designed without spindles, making it the perfect choice for builders who already have disc-brake-ready spindles or those who are purchasing a specific set of drop spindles separately. The kit comes complete with brand-new calipers, pads, bearings, and seals, ensuring that every wear component in your front braking system is fresh and reliable. It is a comprehensive solution for the enthusiast who demands both performance and style.

        • Note: Requires the use of 1969-later style tie rod ends for proper geometry and clearance.
        • Wheel Requirement: Must be used with a minimum of 15-inch wheels to clear the caliper housing.

        SPECS

Every component in this EMPI kit is manufactured to strict tolerances to ensure a seamless installation and long-term durability. The technical specifications include:

        • Part Number: 22-3029-0
        • Rotor Style: Solid, vented-surface cast iron for maximum thermal stability.
        • Bolt Pattern 1: 5x130mm (Porsche) with 14x1.5mm threaded holes.
        • Bolt Pattern 2: 5x4.75-inch (Chevy) with 12x1.5mm threaded holes.
        • Caliper Type: Single-piston floating calipers designed for high-torque clamping.
        • Brake Pads: Premium semi-metallic friction material included.
        • Bearings: High-quality inner and outer wheel bearings included.
        • Seals: Double-lipped grease seals for maximum spindle protection.
        • Hardware: High-tensile strength mounting bolts and necessary washers included.
        • Spindles: Not included (requires disc brake specific spindles).

        PRO TIPS

Proper Bearing Packing is Critical: When installing the new bearings provided in this kit, don''t just smear grease on the outside. You must properly "pack" the bearings by forcing high-quality disc brake grease into the cage until it squeezes out through the rollers on the other side. Using a bearing packer tool is ideal, but the "palm of the hand" method works if you are patient. Failure to pack the bearings thoroughly will lead to premature heat buildup and spindle damage within the first few miles of driving.

Verify Tie Rod End Compatibility: Many 1966-1968 Beetles still have the early-style tie rod ends. This kit specifically requires 1969 and later style tie rod ends because the taper on the steering arm of most disc brake spindles (which you will be using with this kit) is designed for the larger, later-style studs. If you try to force early ends into late spindles, they will not seat correctly, creating a major safety hazard. Always check your tie rod ends before finishing the assembly to ensure a tight, tapered fit.

Upgrade Your Master Cylinder: If you are converting from a four-wheel drum setup to front discs, I highly recommend upgrading to a 20.6mm dual-circuit master cylinder. While the stock master cylinder can technically move the fluid, the larger bore of a performance master cylinder provides a much better pedal feel and ensures you have enough fluid volume to actuate the caliper pistons efficiently. Also, remember to remove the residual pressure valve for the front lines if your specific master cylinder utilizes them, as disc brakes do not require the constant line pressure that drum brake wheel cylinders do.
