OVERVIEW
Upgrading your classic Volkswagen from outdated drum brakes to a modern disc setup is the single most important safety improvement you can make for your vehicle. This EMPI Ball Joint Front Disc Brake Kit is designed specifically for the 1966 to 1977 Standard Beetle, providing a massive increase in stopping power and reliability that stock components simply cannot match. Unlike original drums that are prone to heat soak and significant brake fade during heavy use or mountain descents, this kit features high-performance drilled and slotted rotors. These rotors are precision-engineered to dissipate heat rapidly and expel gasses and debris from the pad surface, ensuring a consistent, firm pedal feel even under the most demanding driving conditions. Whether you are navigating congested city traffic or pushing your air-cooled VW on a spirited weekend cruise, this conversion kit delivers the confidence and modern safety standards you need to stop on a dime.
This comprehensive kit includes the vital components needed to transform your front end braking performance, excluding the spindles themselves. It is the ideal solution for builders who already have disc-brake-ready spindles or are purchasing a set of dropped or stock-height disc spindles separately. The kit comes complete with brand-new calipers, high-friction brake pads, protective backing plates, and all necessary hardware including specialized dust caps. The rotors feature the classic 4 on 130mm lug pattern with 14x1.5mm threaded bolt holes, allowing you to maintain the authentic VW wheel fitment while benefiting from 21st-century braking technology. By eliminating the constant manual adjustment required by drum brakes, you will spend significantly less time in the garage performing maintenance and more time enjoying the open road. This is a direct-fit bolt-on upgrade that drastically reduces stopping distances and enhances the overall handling and safety of your vintage Volkswagen.

PRO TIPS
1. Verify Your Spindle Configuration Before Installation
It is absolutely critical to understand that this kit does not include spindles, and standard drum brake spindles are NOT compatible with disc brake calipers. The mounting boss for a drum brake wheel cylinder is entirely different from the mounting ears required for a disc brake caliper. If you are currently running drums, you must purchase either stock-height disc brake spindles or dropped disc brake spindles to use this kit. Attempting to modify drum spindles is dangerous and will not provide the correct geometry for safe braking. Always double-check that your spindles are straight and the bearing surfaces are free of scoring before mounting your new drilled and slotted rotors.
2. Proper Bearing Packing and Grease Selection
Since this kit requires the separate purchase of a wheel bearing kit (we recommend Appletree part number 22-2851-0), the longevity of your new brake system depends heavily on how those bearings are handled. Never install bearings dry. You should use a high-quality, high-temperature disc brake grease. Disc brakes generate significantly more localized heat than drum brakes, and standard chassis grease can liquefy and leak out, leading to catastrophic bearing failure or grease contamination on your new brake pads. Use a bearing packer tool or the traditional hand-packing method to ensure grease is forced through the cage and rollers until it is completely saturated.
3. Wheel Clearance and Tie Rod Compatibility
Because the calipers on a disc brake system sit further outboard than drum components, wheel fitment is a major consideration. This kit requires a minimum of a 15-inch wheel; most 14-inch or smaller vintage wheels will rub against the caliper housing. Additionally, because of the physical space the caliper occupies, you must use 1969-later style tie rod ends. These later tie rod ends have a different profile that prevents interference with the rotor and caliper during full-lock turns. Before your first test drive, always cycle the steering from lock-to-lock while the car is on jack stands to ensure there is no contact between the brake hoses, tie rods, and the inner wheel rim.
